My Final Thoughts...

Digital Citizenship…

Throughout our lives, we have to take a stand at one time or another. Whether that be in politics or religion, you will be asked to stand your ground on a given topic. But the day and age we live in sees our young people introduced into a new battleground: the digital realm. And the effects of this realm determine an incredible amount of what the world sees in us. This is what Digital Citizenship clarifies for us.

The effects can range from our own responsibilities while on the web to the very access afforded to us. So, here is my position on the digital realm.  While Digital Access may be necessary to students nowadays, nondigital means must not be forgotten. Too much time online can be as much a detriment as a help.

But, if you are going to ask a student take part in the digital realm, making sure they are literate in how the internet works and how the various programs and functions work. If you throw someone in half baked, they are at risk for making very dangerous decisions. And I believe that the rest of the key points become more of subcategories to this.

Digital etiquette, communication, security, commerce, law, wellness and responsibilities are all going to have to be explored for the individual to be fully away of the digital realm.  They must now there is a way to act, to portray themselves. They must learn how to be safe, which is more than not sharing passwords, which is a big part of buying and selling online as well. Most students know what plagiarism is. But what you pull from the web can also be claimed as plagiarism, so the different forms of credit must be given to the original authors.

The biggest thing to take away is that what happens online stays online, and I mean FOREVER. What you post and what you say online can not be deleted. There will always be a copy somewhere with someone, and that can come back to bite you in the butt later in your life. That picture or video you posted can have ramifications for anyone that sees it generations down the line.

That is the goal of Digital Citizenship. To explain to you in full the styles and consequences of the actions that can happen while in the web.  You can either be changed, or be a changer. Similarly, as with the issue of concealed firearms, if all the people on the web are seeking harm upon others, there need to be people able to navigate and counter those people. People like us. People like you.

I posted a video on my Youtube channel.
